Kiyo lives in a house at the foot of a mountain, receiving support from her neighborhood friends, her son and daughter-in-law, and a care helper. Then she receives a phone call from her son, who informs her that her daughter, Akiki, who had left home after a big fight more than ten years ago, is coming back to her parents' house. Akiyo leaves a note on her calendar saying "lettuce maki," a local dish in Miyazaki Prefecture.
