This Hulu original tells the story of Maeda Yumeko, a university student who chases her dreams as she aspires to become a manga artist. One day, she wins an award from a major publisher’s manga magazine. As a result, she teams up with hitmaker editor Mutsuki(?) to aim for her debut one-shot publication. However, Yumeko soon encounters the hardships of creation, fails to demonstrate her true potential and is rejected. Unable to regain her self confidence, she decides to take on the next major competition, the “Manga Future Grand Prize.” She tackles the romance genre for the first time, but struggles daily to draw what she truly wants. However, one night the manga she is working on materializes in her dream, and within it, she meets a man named Kanato who doesn’t act the way she wants him to.
Never Have I Ever season 3 is charming and hilarious as it has been in past seasons and still sports a diverse ensemble cast. However, the show doesn’t always treat its marginalized characters that well.

Netflix’s Shadow and Bone has a complicated relationship with race. It has a diverse cast, but not without its problems. Based on Leigh Bardugo’s two book series, the show features characters from the Shadow and Bone trilogy, which is very straight and white, and the Six of Crows duology, which is much more diverse. When bringing together a cast and writing about these characters, the team behind the show expanded upon some of the representation missing from the first trilogy, then seemed to take away representation from the duology. Shadow and Bone seems to play a bit of a push and pull game when it comes to portraying diversity onscreen.
“Candyman ain't a 'he.’ Candyman is the whole damn hive." Candyman represents all Black victims of white supremacy, and this art form narratively conveys it in a succinct, adulatory way, the history of which is rare to find.

The power of a talented female director like Patty Jenkins and an overall diverse cast is what makes this film worth watching for me.
