Based on Oh Yu-kwon's novel, A Mountain Hut In No-Man's Land, in which a woman helps two men who seek refuge in her humble mountain home at the start of the Korean War. However, her generosity and kindness leads to her losing her family, house and land.
In the film adaptation, director Jon M. Chu turns each musical number into a massive show stopper, with grand set pieces and a wealth of diverse dancers. Yet, in this attempt to show reverence for the people of the Washington Heights barrio, Chu, or maybe more specifically those in charge of casting, left out a crucial part of the community, Afro-Latinos.
The Lighthouse is patient and hypnotic, pulling us in with its mysterious atmosphere and characters. The film’s slow pace proves to be monumentally effective, showcasing the tedious nature that comes with isolation and poor two-way communication.
The film exhibits a respect for the craft and an empathy for human tribulations that have historically been ignored.
Lucifer is a show with both comedy and drama, but most importantly, has charm. Well aware it’s following a silly premise, the show does so in a way that’s entertaining. Sure, sometimes it can be cheesy, but fun cheese.
