Jon Caine, a respected lecturer in a university, was found missing. Three months later he resurfaced and massacred a group of civilians and police at a cafe. After being apprehended by Detective Inspector Aleana, he was sent to an asylum to be interrogated by a criminal psychologist, Dr Melanie Surya. Jon was erratic and psychotic, as well as deadly - traits that he didn't have before he went missing. Melanie soon learnt that her very existence is the key to Jon's sudden change of behavior and ultimately, she unlocked the secret that Jon has held inside him.

Perhaps the most amazing and groundbreaking quality about The Birdcage is how removed it is from both illness and insensitivity. Whereas films preceding it were often somber stories about the tribulations of being gay in a conservatively straight world, Nichols and screenwriter Elaine May expose the fallacies of conservatism as traditional values are thrown into a more open-minded space. They don’t care how far the community has fallen so much as how high they can rebuild themselves.
If you are a discerning movie watcher and/or an African-American with a modicum of Black consciousness, this film isn’t for you. It would be better to watch the documentary ‘They Fight’ to see the impactful, emotional story of Walter Manigan and the young men of DC’s Ward 8.
