Near the Abrok river bordering Korea and China, both Chinese citizens of the Qing dynasty and Chosun immigrants live together peacefully. When Yeon Ching-su of the Wol-gwan martial arts sect, a Korean, is killed in a fight against Pang of the Qing's Pacheon sect, his student Jin Ho-rim goes into the mountains to train in the art of Gol-gwon fighting skills with Master Gol-bo. He masters the Gol-gwon skills and descends to find Pang. Pang sends his henchman who is easily beaten by Ho-rim and Pang resorts to kidnapping Master Gol-bo's daughter Chu-hwa. When Ho-rim fails to rescue Chu-hwa, he challenges Pang to a fight to the finish. When Ho-rim is cornered by Pang, Master Gol-bo appears and teaches Ho-rim the secret skill of Gol-gwon and he succeeds in beating Pang. - KMDB
I highly recommend Dark Waters. It’s a highly engrossing picture, which lends itself to cautionary storytelling. The dark information continually grows, inspiring change and accountability altogether. Overall, Haynes’ picture will not be known for its inclusiveness--but it will be known for being a fantastic, engrossing film.
The Gates, John Burr’s new thriller film, is a disturbingly realistic portrayal of three Black twenty-somethings - Derek (Mason Gooding), Kevin (Algee Smith), and Tyon (Keith Powers), as they accidentally take a wrong turn into a gated community that’s more like a modern-day sundown town. The three friends witness a variety of crimes in their new surroundings, including an attempted homicide and an attempted rape. As they attempt to alert the authorities and do the right thing, they are thwarted at every turn by the worst horror stories of American conservatism - racist white suburbanites, reckless gun violence, corrupt police, religious mania, and a megalomaniacal pastor.
