A con man mining promoter (John Schnieder, a drunk, has-been miner (Bruce Weitz), a lovely widow (Rebecca Jenkins) and her troubled son (Jonathon Jackson) head off into the mountains to find the long dead Ruby Silver mine. Along the way, they find themselves.
Overall, Matthias & Maxime doesn't reinvent this romantic concept. But it also doesn't need to. Dolan weaves a story of love, friendship, and life that is both realistic and bittersweet. The film is nuanced and sensual in a way we don't get to see often with LGBTQ characters. It's a film that we can celebrate.
The message to take away from 'Causeway' is that toxic masculinity can manifest in anyone, no matter what their gender identity is.

In addition to the cast being delightfully diverse this time around, the film was just loosely-plotted and action-packed enough to keep a casual fan like myself entertained. While I do agree that the writing of Cole left much to be desired for an original character thrust into a preconceived universe, none of the characters seemed particularly fleshed out in terms of personality; however, I think that's to be expected when you're watching a film literally inspired by a video game.
