The young and attractive police inspector Lola Kraft loses her partner during a botched operation in Stuttgart and is subsequently transferred to the supposedly quiet town of Calw as a form of punishment. But right away in her first case, which she has to solve with her new partner, the easygoing and somewhat washed-up detective Karl Jäger, she is confronted with a brutal murder: psychiatrist Dr. Claudia Kretschmer is found dead.

It’s easy to dismiss Joel and Ethan Coen for writing from the world they build from outside the box of overarching Hollywood stereotypes, but their inability to compromise their collective vision is precisely what makes the simplistic nature of their world-building and characters so brilliant. It’s also what led Fargo to collect seven Oscar nominations and two wins for Best Original Screenplay and Best Actress for Frances McDormand’s brilliant portrayal of the sincere, motherly detective whose wholesome demeanor seizes the day over the selfishness, corruption and evil of the men who don’t comprehend that there’s more to life than a little money.
The French-born director Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre’s strategic choice to entrust the interpretation of a conventional, feminine character to a non-binary actor pays off: Corrin’s Lady Chatterley is awkward, edgy, and uninhibited at the same time.
This action thriller is made with the hope that the black youth of America will feel empowered, and realize the significance of their heritage.
