Abi fails to get admitted to the Economic Faculty in University of Indonesia and he ends up getting involved in three miserable romances. The first girl, Melisa, is easily influenced by her friends, so she dumps Abi via telephone. Then there is Nadya the high school student. Abi tries to win her love by pretending to be a flower seller. The relationship ends when Nadya has to move to France. Broken-hearted, Abi takes time off to visit his uncle at the tea plantation. Here, Abi falls in love when he sees Rama, the village girl. But their relationship does not work out.
Seeing that the film was essentially his first big, mainstream feature, and with garnering a leading role — portraying the revolutionary ball-player Jackie Robinson — Boseman, without question, delivered a performance that is still so incredibly moving, respectful, genuine, and true to the core of his obviously sincere, artistic heart; and with that, it is indeed so saddening to see him pass.
I hope that more people will see Joyland, understand the situation, and eventually change themselves and society so we can have a more accommodating world where everyday tragedies like the one depicted in the film do not occur.
At first glance, one wouldn't think John Carpenter's cult classic would be a thematic double-billing - or that Free Guy would be worthy of being mentioned in the same sentence as They Live - but the two films of vastly different genres have more similarities upon further examination.
