Forced to guard his mother’s body alone in his childhood home, Yuval is strictly ordered to remain at the scene and wait for the burial society to evacuate the body. Trapped in this nightmarish vigil, he fights the silence by paying an escort to stay on the phone, weaving a fantasy life to escape the grim reality of mechanically tending to the corpse. When dawn breaks and the body is finally taken away, the distraction fades, leaving Yuval alone to face the absolute finality of his loss.
Love, Simon (2018) based on the book “Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda” (by Becky Albertalli) is a teen LGBTQ+ rom-com with themes of longing to find others with similar struggles, and ultimately is a story of acceptance of identity from those around you, and most importantly, from yourself.
I'm bad, and that's good. I will never be good, and that's not bad. There's no one I'd rather be than me.
The trainwreck is hot but tame.
This film was filled with great plot points. Unfortunately, they all contradicted each other and clashed. Had the premise of Awake been more consistent and accurately portrayed the real world aspect, I think this could have been an extreme success.
Over the last several years, I have had the privilege of being one of the critics having the opportunity to watch and review several films from writer/director/producer Marcellus Cox, whose efforts are never anything less but grounded, relevant, and steeped in unflinching glimpses illustrating the gripping, inspired, and ever-vacillating realms that make up the human condition.
As a frequent “the book was better” extoller, this movie was well worth the watch.
