The story follows Midah, Rohayu and Ani, 3 widows from a remote village, who are devoted fans of singer Aiman Zalini. When the singer's final concert is announced, the three women try and do everything they can to raise money. But they fail. Without losing hope, they attempt to do the most extraordinary thing, possibly inspired by the immediate success of a local loafer who creates an additive-free vape juice business, all natural, non-tobacco! Their vape formula created with the help of a humble lab assistant becomes an unexpected success and they have enough money to buy concert tickets! However, unknowingly, the viral and natural vape juice has caused many drug addicts to recover and this creates a demand issue for the drug cartel leader. It only seems to prove that when the company had their backs against the wall and needed an all pleasing, generic movie that had to make up for The Last Jedi, they chose to sacrifice almost everything that made their main protagonist interesting and that made her stand out as the strong female character that a generation of young movie goers was supposed to look up to. Instead, we were left with a Rey that was so much less than she could have been. And I guess that’s the real story of Rey and The Rise of Skywalker; they could have been so much more, but they were just more of the same.
If you are a discerning movie watcher and/or an African-American with a modicum of Black consciousness, this film isn’t for you. It would be better to watch the documentary ‘They Fight’ to see the impactful, emotional story of Walter Manigan and the young men of DC’s Ward 8.
