Signs of nature can no longer be used as a guide. In this film, A Javanese calendar of natural phenomena, animals, and plants that serve as a guideline in agriculture since tens of years ago is juxtaposed with today’s phenomenon.
This is not a slavery story, it is a freedom story. The viewers only see Harriet as a slave for the first few minutes of the film. To me, it felt like watching the origin story of a superhero…which is both good and bad.
The film is a simple love story reminiscent of stories like The Notebook released in 2004. Sylvie and Robert are rarely actually together in the film, however; time and circumstance keep them away from each other, and the audience waits with bated breath to see them find one another over and over.
