It is a story of two sisters with different personalities, Maya and Lila. Lila is a tender woman with strong religious faith while Maya, her elder sister, believes in the mystic and magic, and practices sorcery. Lila is raped by four young men and dies. Maya then avenges her sister by way of sorcery toward the four young men. And so begins a terrifying ritual: the dispatch of atrocious witchcraft to Robert and his crony, that is “Erotic Black Magic”. One by one they die mysteriously by Maya’s sorcery, aided by Lila’s ghost.

Netflix’s Shadow and Bone has a complicated relationship with race. It has a diverse cast, but not without its problems. Based on Leigh Bardugo’s two book series, the show features characters from the Shadow and Bone trilogy, which is very straight and white, and the Six of Crows duology, which is much more diverse. When bringing together a cast and writing about these characters, the team behind the show expanded upon some of the representation missing from the first trilogy, then seemed to take away representation from the duology.
