The musical clowns Rik and Rak, father Švamberk and his daughter Zdeňka, are struggling miserably on the pilgrimage. Zdeňka reveals to the old clown Tom that her father grew up in the nearby Lípov castle, but his father disinherited it because of his marriage to a comedian. On Tom's advice, Zdeňka sends her grandfather a promotional photo of herself asking to meet him.
