Ryuzo Kitajima is an art collector. His collection is cursed, in that it deprives the owner of his right mind and bestows instead evil power and strength. Kasuga sisters, the three daughters of Ryuzo Kitajima, disguised as Night Cats, embark on retrieving the collection to seal off its curse again that was stolen after their parents had been butchered. Ai, the eldest of the sisters, gets trapped and kidnapped by a mad art collector when the 10,000-carat diamond, the Fairy’s Smile, one item of the collection is taken back. Mai, the second sister, goes into the enemy’s land to save her sister, where she is met by assassin sister agents and a monstrous wrestler. Mai is so worried about her imprisoned sister Ai that she just cannot wield her full power, overwhelmed by assassin sisters. There appears Yoko Asaoka, a woman investigator. Mii, the third sister, sets out for the rescue of her sisters... Will she be able to seal off the cursed collection? A fierce battle follows.
Escape The Field is a serviceable horror thriller. The characters are easier to remember as horror character tropes. As I wrote this review, I only remembered the characters by their tropes: #FinalGirl, #Everyman, #Badass, #MeanB*/SexyGirl, #Realist/BlackLesbian, and #TheNerd.
When diverse representation is featured on-screen, it oftentimes comes with strings attached that undermine the message they were trying to send. This can be attributed to the fact that behind-the-screen, the industry primarily does not reflect the breadth of diverse difference that is present in daily life. That’s why when something as powerful and authentic as Minari comes along, it is both incredibly wonderful and needs a large audience to witness it.
An aspect of She-Ra that I find refreshing is even though a large portion of the cast is on the LGBTQ+ Spectrum, being gay is never mentioned. While this might initially sound like a negative thing, in the show’s land of Etheria being on the gay spectrum is shown to be so common and normalized that straight isn’t the default. As much as there is to appreciate about narratives revolving around the obstacles that may come from being non-heteronormative, it’s nice to get immersed in a world where no one bats an eye at all to any sort of differing identity.
Sweetheart provides a stark example of self-isolation taken to its extreme.
