1920: Madame Blanche discovers, reading the newspaper, that one of her tenants has been arrested. The woman, with the maid Tedla, goes to the police station to try and get her money. The inquiry starts from here: Monsieur is accused of homicide. The police will find ten paintings portraying ten women: the maid begin to tell the story of those ten women that she knew. But, one by one disappeared. A sequence of women stories. Along series of homicides. And just one killer.
Some people’s first introduction to Mira Nair might be as New York mayor Zohran Mamdani’s mom. But with her insightful direction of 1991’s Mississippi Masala, Nair shows how much she deserves to be known as an artist. Delivering a nuanced portrait of a romance between a Black man and an Indian woman living in the South, Nair explores the complications each character faces, giving both equal weight.
If you are a discerning movie watcher and/or an African-American with a modicum of Black consciousness, this film isn’t for you. It would be better to watch the documentary ‘They Fight’ to see the impactful, emotional story of Walter Manigan and the young men of DC’s Ward 8.
A direct fall into the white savior narrative
