2019. Lithuania. An unseen and unheard of virus catches a country unprepared. The country is quarantined and all life goes into the distance. Meanwhile, the ever-promising police investigator Meilūnas is dealing with a not-so-usual case - while the country is under quarantine, the wife of citizen Šlamštutis has disappeared. The investigation is conducted remotely. On the one hand, it is convenient to work remotely, but on the other hand it is very difficult to find a common language between the investigator and the suspects. Comic situations are just bursting at the edges, and then there's the wife, the innate modesty and the internal rivalry within the police force, which all get in the way of a good performance. Suspicious circumstances abound, the case stalls and even Santa Claus is on the list of suspects.
Seeing that the film was essentially his first big, mainstream feature, and with garnering a leading role — portraying the revolutionary ball-player Jackie Robinson — Boseman, without question, delivered a performance that is still so incredibly moving, respectful, genuine, and true to the core of his obviously sincere, artistic heart; and with that, it is indeed so saddening to see him pass.
21 Bridges isn’t going to revolutionize action cinema. However, its action components are respectable. Every act is visibly clear, and as time moves forward, the film changes its conflictual rhythm.
Ruben Östlund muses about his characters, “As soon as you get close to a person, you see them as just another human being”. It is widely recognized that aboard the luxury yacht in ‘Triangle of Sadness’, the different groups of people represent a small society as a commentary on classism and gender binaries.
A Christmas tale that everyone is wishing for, and that everyone will remember.
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie comes on the heels of its billion-dollar grossing predecessor, and seeks to do absolutely nothing other than repeat its success. In this, the film is eminently effective. If you have seen the previous film, you can expect something extremely similar in this package. That is, a barrage of references to Nintendo intellectual property wrapped in a plot that provides the thinnest layer of emotional payoff for the characters.
A film for the post-MeToo era that inverts the narrative with an ironic coda, Tár depicts the duality of a sensitive artist capable of great evil and vile manipulation.
