Monty, a famous painter, is grappling with the reality of fast-approaching deadlines, a fresh divorce, and a blank canvas. When he is thrown into a void with nothing but his own thoughts and feelings, Monty must face his personal demons head on or be consumed by madness.
Hoppers is a fun ride with a deep message underneath. In true Pixar fashion, Hoppers explores the complexity of emotions and learning to be still in a world that demands fast progress. Through the main character Mabel, we are reminded what it is like to let ourselves feel big emotions. But also how not to be controlled by them.
It only seems to prove that when the company had their backs against the wall and needed an all pleasing, generic movie that had to make up for The Last Jedi, they chose to sacrifice almost everything that made their main protagonist interesting and that made her stand out as the strong female character that a generation of young movie goers was supposed to look up to. Instead, we were left with a Rey that was so much less than she could have been. And I guess that’s the real story of Rey and The Rise of Skywalker; they could have been so much more, but they were just more of the same.
A gentle coming of age story, Water Lilies takes its time in exploring what it’s like to be a young girl trying to make sense of her sexuality in a heteronormative world.
The power of a talented female director like Patty Jenkins and an overall diverse cast is what makes this film worth watching for me.
This is a film that is going to leave some people bored, and some people thrilled.
