It's a subject we don't talk about. And yet, throughout the world, our toilets are undergoing a revolution unparalleled since the 19th century. Bill Gates is investing hundreds of millions of dollars to develop new types of toilet. India is installing millions of latrines so that no-one defecates in the open air any more. A public health issue, of course, but also a fable about our relationship with our most basic waste.
While it is more than established that Halston’s life is far from a fairytale, the narrative suffers as a result of the decision to revolve more around sex and drugs than his artistry, it likely does a disservice to his cultural impact by pulling focus from his achievements.
This is not a slavery story, it is a freedom story. The viewers only see Harriet as a slave for the first few minutes of the film. To me, it felt like watching the origin story of a superhero…which is both good and bad.
