For Jeff Cox, big game animal trainer, it’s a dream come true, but for his long-time girlfriend, Barbara, it’s the end of a perfect fairytale. Jeff’s partner, David Mirschkov returns to the U.S. with unsettling news for Barbara. Jeff will be staying with the tiger project for an indefinite period. Feeling betrayed by Jeff’s unrelenting career, Barbara throws herself into a steamy affair with David. Barbara now has an insatiable desire for love and commitment, but her desperate need for traditional values contrasts with David’s inexhaustible search for utopian idealism. These confines won’t really encourage you to read the film as a metaphor for the nerve-inducing experience we’ve all been through over the last year, however — and in the interest of maintaining your dignity, you probably shouldn’t. While the sociopolitical commentary may have worked for the similarly-themed Buried (2010), in which we find Ryan Reynolds on his own buried alive in the Middle East, but this futuristic take on the premise is best left as a piece of distracting entertainment. Nevertheless, the atmosphere is no less suffocating, literally and dramatically.
