His daughter Christine, a proud young woman, mocks young Hans, who asks for her hand in marriage, because of his humble origins. Later, she realizes her mistake, but Hans turns away from her. Meanwhile, Grutz suffers a serious injury while working in the fields and prepares for the end. But contrary to all expectations, he recovers and reconciles with his land, as well as with Hans and Christine.
