Clinical psychiatrist Dr. Jennifer Haver begins caring for a mysterious new patient on the quiet ward of a psychiatric hospital. After learning the patient is an artist, she encourages him to draw as a form of therapy. Dr. Haver becomes fascinated as day after day the mysterious man draws the same exact image over and over. An unexpected difference in one of the drawings makes her realize that her patient may possess a curious gift. In Spike Lee’s She’s Gotta Have It (1986), we follow the love life of powerful female protagonist Nola Darling (Tracy Camilla Johns) and explore the relationship dynamics she has with her partners. She sees three men simultaneously: Greer Childs, (John Canada Terrell) Mars Blackmon (Spike Lee), and Jamie Overstreet (Tommy Redmond Hicks). Though an 80’s film, She’s Gotta Have It is surprisingly progressive with its themes of female sexuality, although at some points in the film it is handled clumsily. Overall Nola is an incredibly compelling character especially for modern women, as we as a society acknowledge female sensuality more and more without the negative stigma.
The most divisive character in Multiverse of Madness is undoubtedly Wanda Maximoff. Is she good or evil? Is she "unlikeable?" I'm tired of the debate. I love Wanda because she's for us—she's for the women.
