When Mexican immigrant Jesus Avila(Jorge A. Jimenez, Netflix Narcos) seeks a better life for his family in the United States, he boards the infamous "Train of Death" known as The Beast. His desperate journey to freedom is beset with corrupted Mexican law enforcements, vicious Mexican cartels and ruthless gangs. But as Jesus finally crosses the border into America he is faces with even more sinister threat, a demented Border Patrol Agent (Eduardo Sanchez, Misfire) who exploits innocent immigrants to quench his thirst for violence.
I understood post-memory as passing down stories and images of one’s experiences that are not your own. For decades, rape has been depicted in cinema through a third-person perspective, leaving the viewer to observe rape; not to experience it.
Ultra-violent storytelling has never been my thing, but the issues with Scarface go beyond that. The film perpetuates harmful stereotypes about Latinx immigrants and uses gore and misogyny for shock value that never serves any purpose. The whole venture is frustratingly empty, and left me desiring something more.
This horror movie combines elements of horror and babysitting with Black representation.
The more we learned with each passing minute the bigger the reveal. This film ends with a serious bang and it was truly a joy to watch.
Unfortunately, People We Meet on Vacation didn’t hold up quite as well as I’d hoped.
This current year, as well as the past several, has seen a slowly building increase in something the horror genre has required for quite a while in this critic's opinion...originality. I've stated before that I am very hard to please when it comes to this vein of the film industry's offerings, always leaning more towards that which sends chills through my very being in lieu of buckets of blood and gore.
