The Errol Barrow docudrama, "Barrow: Freedom Fighter" tells the story about the courage of one man who relentlessly preached a gospel of economic self reliance and self respect to the people of his native country Barbados and beyond. He defied the status quo, confronted racism and classicism, fought colonial oppression and selflessly led his people to political and economic freedom.
Overall, Matthias & Maxime doesn't reinvent this romantic concept. But it also doesn't need to. Dolan weaves a story of love, friendship, and life that is both realistic and bittersweet. The film is nuanced and sensual in a way we don't get to see often with LGBTQ characters. It's a film that we can celebrate.
A short film that begins with the language of romance but slowly reveals something far more unsettling beneath the surface.
