Didi, a French traveler, visits a rural town and explores the mountains by bicycle. At a remote shrine, she meets a suspicious young man named Chance, dressed as a farmer, but her bicycle gets a flat tire and she ends up spending the night in an old house. She then meets Emi, a woman who works at a bakery in town, and they hit it off, and the two of them ride through the mountains together. Before long, the end of summer arrives.

In addition to the cast being delightfully diverse this time around, the film was just loosely-plotted and action-packed enough to keep a casual fan like myself entertained. While I do agree that the writing of Cole left much to be desired for an original character thrust into a preconceived universe, none of the characters seemed particularly fleshed out in terms of personality; however, I think that's to be expected when you're watching a film literally inspired by a video game.
Overall, Sand Castle was another lack luster war drama that will eventually fade into the many similar war dramas I have seen throughout my life.
