Michael Schröder is the owner of a fitness studio that is not running. His marriage to the aristocratic and wealthy lawyer Elisabeth also only exists on paper. She lives out her love affair with lover Cornelius openly, but a divorce is unthinkable for Elisabeth for reasons of reputation. Because Michael is up to his neck financially, she gets him a loan. When he arrives at the bank, he is taken hostage during a robbery. The masked bank robber turns out to be a female bank robber. Nina seems aggressive, tired of life and unpredictable. The grueling wait for ransom money and a getaway car eventually turns hostage and hostage-taker into a fated couple. Michael even knows who they can demand more money from. But then everything gets out of hand.

As this critic continues to look back at some of this Summer's films I have taken in, I would be remiss if I didn't mention one of the most overall unsettling trends in Hollywood over the last several years.....sequels, reboots, and remakes. Look, I am all for seeing more than one film for certain originals that made a splash, ie: "Jurassic Park", "Pirates of the Caribbean", "Transformers", etc.
When it comes the horror genre, I am VERY hard to please or impress, much less scare. Coming from a current mindset of appreciation for chilling, unsettling, tension-inducing efforts such as "Hereditary", "The Conjuring" (ONLY the first one to date, mind you), "Lights Out", "The Babadook", "Midsommar", "Talk To Me", "Oddity", "Bring Her Back", and the like
The Super Mario Galaxy Movie comes on the heels of its billion-dollar grossing predecessor, and seeks to do absolutely nothing other than repeat its success. In this, the film is eminently effective. If you have seen the previous film, you can expect something extremely similar in this package. That is, a barrage of references to Nintendo intellectual property wrapped in a plot that provides the thinnest layer of emotional payoff for the characters.
