Watch Terrible Tourists Get Eaten in The Devil's Mouth

In Amazon’s new shark flick, The Devil’s Mouth, terrible tourists finally get their comeuppance while two estranged best friends must overcome their petty squabbles to survive as the rest of their party gets chomped one by one. While it’s by no means an Oscar winner, The Devil’s Mouth is good old fashioned shark week carnage with a tourist critical twist, perfect with popcorn, a friend, and a healthy does of schadenfreude. 

The film centers around Max (Lana Condor) and Sara (Kathryn Newton) as they screw around the various natural wonders of Thailand with their friends Greg (Gavin Casalegno), James (Nico Hiraga) and Adrienne (Tommi Rose). The group often disregards Sara, leaving her to be consoled by Max, even accidentally abandoning her to be swarmed by a group of stinging jellyfish as the group parties on a yacht. Without getting Sara medical attention for the gruesome wounds running up and down her legs, the group decides to continue their tour of Thailand by going on a swimming tour of some underwater caves called The Devil’s Mouth, despite the numerous catastrophic cave exploration incidents of the 2020s. 

In the caves, the group laughs and jokes despite their dangerous surroundings and the warnings of their tour guide Wat (Tayme Thapthimthong) to respect the caves. This, of course, they do not do. When Adrienne cuts herself and Wat explains it’s tour policy to return to shore, Max pressures him into continuing the tour. See, pressuring people is kind of part of Max’s personality. Throughout the film, Max pressures Sara to change her career plans and move cross country to be with her, dismissing Sara’s own career goals. However, that quickly becomes a moot point. 

On top of Adrienne’s injury, floating carnage leads the group to suspect there’s a shark in the water and an argument breaks out, causing an exasperated Wat to abandon the group. Adrienne slips into the shark’s grasp and Max and Sara fight over a plan for what to do next. In order to avoid splitting up the group, Sara agrees to follow Max’s escape plan, but of course it all goes wrong. Greg is snarfed by the shark, James then gets crushed by a rock and drowns, and Sara and Max realize they’ve traveled in a circle. Max finally apologizes for her behavior and agrees to Sara’s plan to escape the cave, but it’s the end of Max. As Sara finally breaks, fantasizing about abandoning her crappy best friend and watching her die, Max is actually caught by the shark, leaving Sara to climb out the cave and scream into the wild triumphantly. 

Overall, the film is pretty lackluster, lacking realism and being a worse version of shark movies to come before. The characters are unlikeable, mean to each other, and disrespectful to the land. However, it’s that aspect of the film that provides a modern, anti-tourist streak that belongs in 2026, making The Devil’s Mouth a bad, but emblematic, shark movie of our time.
