Feature film produced by Beijing Film Studio in 1980, directed by Qian Jiang and Zhao Yuan. During the period of the "Gang of Four," Chen Hao -- a veteran cadre of a certain unit of the People's Liberation Army -- is brutally persecuted. Chen's three biological sons are also tortured physically and mentally. Defending the honor of a soldier, Chen is beaten into disability. After the collapse of the "Gang of Four," Chen returns to his post. Two of his children see their love lives fall apart, due to their father's precarious status, while the third child pursues a decadent lifestyle to dangerous ends.
Movie explained - Despite the glaring flaws present, Young Adult Matters is held together by the performances from Yoo Mi and Hani, who keep the story afloat. Though an interesting story, Young Adult Matters is worth watching solely for these performances. Perhaps the most amazing and groundbreaking quality about The Birdcage is how removed it is from both illness and insensitivity. Whereas films preceding it were often somber stories about the tribulations of being gay in a conservatively straight world, Nichols and screenwriter Elaine May expose the fallacies of conservatism as traditional values are thrown into a more open-minded space. They don’t care how far the community has fallen so much as how high they can rebuild themselves.
