At 2:17 a.m., every child in a third-grade class wakes up, leaves their home, and disappears into the darkness—except one. Ripley is a great character because she serves two distinct, but rewarding, purposes in the original film and the sequel.

'The Last Black Man in San Francisco' is part fiction, part documentary. Jimmie longs for the old Victorian home that he grew up in — the house that his grandfather built. However, this home is now in an overpriced, White, San Francisco neighborhood.

During the third act, the momentum stalls, largely due to the film’s obsession with Kubrick’s visual design. But all in all, Doctor Sleep is a cinematic success, defined by rich characters and high powered emotion.
