Teenage tarot reader Celine has always idolized her mother, Mara - a magically unique woman convinced she possesses real supernatural gifts. But when Mara disappears from their home, Celine’s search for answers pulls her beyond the comfort of her tarot deck into something much darker.
The accountant in question is Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck), who’s neurodivergent. We know this because at a dating event, he bores women with tax advice. He also places his breakfast foods in neat stacks and has no friends.
Overall, Matthias & Maxime doesn't reinvent this romantic concept. But it also doesn't need to. Dolan weaves a story of love, friendship, and life that is both realistic and bittersweet. The film is nuanced and sensual in a way we don't get to see often with LGBTQ characters. It's a film that we can celebrate.
