Few know what happened, in fact, on August 23, 1944, and who were the main actors of change. Words like "coup", "war" and "communists" are used often in the same sentence, without knowing anything about the courage that a king nor 23 had when it was across Hitler's plan.
Overall, Matthias & Maxime doesn't reinvent this romantic concept. But it also doesn't need to. Dolan weaves a story of love, friendship, and life that is both realistic and bittersweet. The film is nuanced and sensual in a way we don't get to see often with LGBTQ characters. It's a film that we can celebrate.
This film was filled with great plot points. Unfortunately, they all contradicted each other and clashed. Had the premise of Awake been more consistent and accurately portrayed the real world aspect, I think this could have been an extreme success.
