David “Screaming Lord” Sutch (1940-1999) the flamboyantly, bipolar, berserk rock singer, emerging from a coffin, armed with prop knives, axes and skulls, and belting out his song Jack the Ripper. But David Sutch was also the founder of the Official Monster Raving Loony Party and served as its leader from 1983 to 1999, during which time he stood in numerous parliamentary elections.
A refreshing twist is that all the kids’ powers are…kind of useless. There’s a kid who can only move in slow motion, a kid who has every power in the world but can only use them randomly, and our main character Missy who has no powers at all. The thesis of the film seems to be that it doesn’t matter what kind of powers you have, its the way you use them, which is good for the warm and fuzzies.
What starts off as a success story for a single mother living below the poverty line, slowly begins to weave itself into a tangled web of greed, guilt, and destruction.
As a frequent “the book was better” extoller, this movie was well worth the watch.
