Lee Daniels’s Billie Holiday biopic The United States vs. Billie Holiday was released on February 26th, 2021, and my immediate reaction to it was one of discomfort.

The movie is based on a novel of the same name written by Vidyullatha Sasanoor. This was the second movie of Shivarajkumar as a lead hero and is the second of the first three movies of his which completed a silver jubilee theatrical run. The core plot of the movie was later used Kaho Na… Pyaar Hai which was Hrithik Roshan’s debut as a lead hero. The movie was later remade in Tamil language by P Vasu titled as Love Birds that starred Prabhu Deva and Nagma.

Overall, “Dark Fate” is a run-of-the-mill flick. Together, Reyes and Davis have excellent chemistry, but their characters’ story is nothing new, lacking surprise and deep emotion. During the middle points, the film drags considerably, and when the action hits, it feels consistently tight, eliminating the rhythm and fluidity of conflicts.
