It is a documentary about the memory of the transition to democracy in Spain built from certain pro ductions of militant cinema that contradict the official images that have formed our memory of the last years of Francoism and of the first years of democracy. "From the responsibility of memory", in the wards of Primo Levi, María Ruido deals with the construction of the historic memory of the Spanish state, but her approach it's not based on the recorded testimonies, but in the verification of the lack of images of certain events and problems.
Seeing that the film was essentially his first big, mainstream feature, and with garnering a leading role — portraying the revolutionary ball-player Jackie Robinson — Boseman, without question, delivered a performance that is still so incredibly moving, respectful, genuine, and true to the core of his obviously sincere, artistic heart; and with that, it is indeed so saddening to see him pass.
Ultra-violent storytelling has never been my thing, but the issues with Scarface go beyond that. The film perpetuates harmful stereotypes about Latinx immigrants and uses gore and misogyny for shock value that never serves any purpose. The whole venture is frustratingly empty, and left me desiring something more.
‘Better Than Chocolate’ isn’t perfect, but it sure has charm! The characters are great. Some took longer to grow on me than others, but ultimately they’re all compelling! I appreciate how a select few help those around them to grow.
