The Navajos. In the 19th century, this peaceful people first survived extermination, at a time when, according to General Sheridan's famous phrase, "the only good Indian is a dead Indian." They then endured, between 1864 and 1866, the "Long Walk" of deportation to New Mexico, which left many of them in the red dust. The 1968 Treaty of Fort Sumner restored one-fifth of their current territory. Twenty years later, an aggressive assimilation policy was introduced, with the motto simply being that "you have to kill the Indian to save the man."
Yes, "Nope" is definitely about the modern obsession with turning tragedy and horror into a spectacle for people’s enjoyment. But it's also about the power of looking, who has the right to look, and what happens to those who are looked upon.
What seems like such a simple story of survival is so much more than that—it’s a story of family, and of war, and of destruction. It’s painful to watch, but not in a bad way. It makes its audience reflect on their own actions, and in how they are complicit in the sufferings of others as the adults in this film are. Grave of the Fireflies does not hold back from being heartbreaking, and it shouldn’t. It tells a message that needs to be heard decades after the war, and a story that cannot be forgotten by history.
