Whenever Rosa (11) is left alone by her mother Nicole (27), she gets haunted by an ominous, shadowlike creature. One day, Rosa's friend Sophie (11) stays over and Nicole sneaks out to spend the night with her lover. The next day her mother is still nowhere to be seen. 'Barbarian' is horror infused with something ridiculous that makes the whole thing entertaining.
The film is a documentary focusing on heavy metal in the late 80s and tackles topics like drug addiction, alcoholism, sex, masculinity, and of course, rock and roll. However, this didn’t feel like any documentary I’ve ever seen before.
The Slumber Party Massacre wonderfully combines the suspense of its horror with its commentary on gender, creating a memorable slasher classic that began a horror trilogy entirely written and directed by women.
Where we leave the characters is in such a peaceful and optimistic place. It feels well-earned to ensure everyone gets their own specially-crafted happy ending.
