Dune (2021): An Islam-Inspired Theme With Powerful Aesthetics, but Reminiscent of Lynch
Villeneuve’s Dune is a masterpiece for its crafting process, but references to David Lynch's picture are sometimes too obvious.

A strange and unique bond is forged against the stark contrast of their different lives and the back drop of the harsh realities of drugs, prostitution and gang life. Somehow these two find sanctuary in each other; Martina helps Hyun reconnect with the world around him and he helps this overly cynical young girl believe in dreams again. Intense, raw performances bring rare emotional veracity and intimacy to a delicate story. An impressive team of emerging talent create a moving, perceptual film.

‘Cursed’ is Struck with a Bland Curse
Cursed is based on Frank Miller’s graphic novel, and is a retelling of the Arthurian legend with a twist. Instead of King Arthur gaining Excalibur, a teenage sorceress named Nimue (Katherine Langford) does. Her people — the Fey — are being hunted down, and so Nimue will do whatever it takes to save them.

An aspect of She-Ra that I find refreshing is even though a large portion of the cast is on the LGBTQ+ Spectrum, being gay is never mentioned. While this might initially sound like a negative thing, in the show’s land of Etheria being on the gay spectrum is shown to be so common and normalized that straight isn’t the default. As much as there is to appreciate about narratives revolving around the obstacles that may come from being non-heteronormative, it’s nice to get immersed in a world where no one bats an eye at all to any sort of differing identity.
