‘Kim’s Convenience’: A Canadian Export Better Than Maple Syrup
Korean culture shines in this Canadian export.

In the 1940s, Sweden was rocked by a scandal when it emerged that two mothers had had their children swapped at the maternity clinic in Bureå, Västerbotten, and had raised them as their own. By the time the tragedy came to light, the children were three years old; as they approached the age of seven, the Supreme Court ruled that the boys should be returned to their biological families. One of the boys was a cousin of the author P.O. Enquist, and the incident—which left a profound mark on him—is a subject he has revisited several times, most notably in his novel *Captain Nemo’s Library*. In this documentary, P.O. Enquist and his relatives share how the mix-up affected their lives. We also learn the backstory of the event, which would reveal a secret far greater than anyone could have imagined.

Netflix’s new comedy drama, Don’t Say Good Luck, is a heartwarming tearjerker as well as a love letter to the transformative power of being a theater kid. Directed by Julia Hart, Don’t Say Good Luck follows Sophie (Sunny Sandler), a theater kid who finally gets the lead role in her school’s production of Waitress - just as she finds out her mom Elizabeth (Melanie Lynskey) is dying of cancer. While the singing is by no means spectacular and Sandler’s acting is stiff, the film is grounded in the moving performance of Lynskey as a mother who wants nothing more than for her daughter to achieve her dreams, even if she can’t be there to see them.
I hadn’t heard of it either until recently—and yet, it’s one of the highest grossing movies of all time.
