The once esoteric and uninspired world of competitive chess is thrown into turmoil when an eccentric German entrepreneur enlists reigning champion Magnus Carlsen to launch a new league that aims to revolutionize the game, challenge the sport's governing body, and "make chess cool."
The film is a simple love story reminiscent of stories like The Notebook released in 2004. Sylvie and Robert are rarely actually together in the film, however; time and circumstance keep them away from each other, and the audience waits with bated breath to see them find one another over and over.
Gritty and bleak are the best words to describe this film. There’s nothing happy about it.
Joann Kohng’s Subject to IX tells the heartbreaking truth of the Title IX rules that colleges abide by.
In addition to the cast being delightfully diverse this time around, the film was just loosely-plotted and action-packed enough to keep a casual fan like myself entertained. While I do agree that the writing of Cole left much to be desired for an original character thrust into a preconceived universe, none of the characters seemed particularly fleshed out in terms of personality; however, I think that's to be expected when you're watching a film literally inspired by a video game.
The film basically says she was a lost cause from the start. We don't get a sense of who Marilyn was.
Effortlessly beautiful and surprisingly tragic.
