Chronicles director Michael Allcock’s global quest to understand why he and so many others on this planet are terrified by the simple act of dancing – what science calls chorophobia. Along the way, he encounters a celebrity chorophobe, dancing robots, virtual reality, and a mysterious dancing plague.
When it comes down to it, The English explores what happens when power is unchecked and how those who seem powerless, have more strength than most through their convictions for justice.
Some people’s first introduction to Mira Nair might be as New York mayor Zohran Mamdani’s mom. But with her insightful direction of 1991’s Mississippi Masala, Nair shows how much she deserves to be known as an artist. Delivering a nuanced portrait of a romance between a Black man and an Indian woman living in the South, Nair explores the complications each character faces, giving both equal weight.
Overall this movie was an easy watch, but by no means a worthwhile watch.
If you are a discerning movie watcher and/or an African-American with a modicum of Black consciousness, this film isn’t for you. It would be better to watch the documentary ‘They Fight’ to see the impactful, emotional story of Walter Manigan and the young men of DC’s Ward 8.
The trainwreck is hot but tame.
