Lee Daniels’s Billie Holiday biopic The United States vs. Billie Holiday was released on February 26th, 2021, and my immediate reaction to it was one of discomfort.

Lumberjack Jerguš is stuck deep in the forest in a seemingly frozen conflict of blunt axes and sharp banners. The greater battle, however, takes place within himself. Struggling with a personal crisis, doubts about faith, and living as a cuckold, he slowly becomes entangled, within his small and insignificant existence, in matters that far exceed him.
