It's not easy, you know. All of us guys spending the whole day and sometimes the night studying scriptures and trying to be so good in our hearts. But we're just young men. We have other needs. Sometimes you can see it in our faces: the frustration of our penises, still covered but throbbing to erection for almost no reason, and we all know it. We desperately need sex. We need to stroke our turgid organs together. We need to slide these erections into our mouths, and our tight, hot young assholes. But everybody says it's wrong. Everybody except our priest. We love our Priest, and he loves us. He's older and knows exactly what to teach us. Some people think that we've gone wild. Maybe, but it's sex that we're wild about. Sex that only Catholic Schoolboys can really know about... isn't faith wonderful?
In the film adaptation, director Jon M. Chu turns each musical number into a massive show stopper, with grand set pieces and a wealth of diverse dancers. Yet, in this attempt to show reverence for the people of the Washington Heights barrio, Chu, or maybe more specifically those in charge of casting, left out a crucial part of the community, Afro-Latinos.
A gentle coming of age story, Water Lilies takes its time in exploring what it’s like to be a young girl trying to make sense of her sexuality in a heteronormative world.
I suppose you could argue that the story wasn’t what Director James Cameron was aiming for, it was the visuals. The spectacle of it all was the point, and it certainly shows.

I can say without question, that this is the first movie I’ve ever seen where art imitates life so much that I could 100% identify with it on a personal level. The predominately Black cast of characters are people with hopes, dreams, fears, and ambitions.
