To the rhythm of their nocturnal stroll, we see how the Dutch reality, from bare mattresses in a condemned building, breakdancing in the street to running from the police, is at odds with their phone calls to relatives who stayed behind and have both concerns and high expectations. To reassure the home front, one Afghan takes a picture of himself in front of a nice house and expensive car.

The biggest highlight of the film is easily the performance of Andrew Garfield. In his days since hanging up his Spiderman suit, Garfield has routinely churned out great performances, and Mainstream is no exception. He proves that he is willing to try anything and go anywhere in a character.
The re-living of this historic trial through this film is relevant to current politics and disturbingly enjoyable to watch due to the excellent performances from the ensemble cast. If you like a juicy courtroom drama, this film will definitely scratch that itch in a really chilling manner.
