A horrific cycling incident leaves a young man, R., with damaged nerves in half of his body. Without much sensation, he can't feel himself. Watching a soothing video on YouTube gives him some pleasure at least. The video is ASMR: it features a guy who whispers and rubs his hands together to make soft noises that pleasures the viewer. When R. returns home from the hospital he is drawn more and more to the video guy who suddenly begins to talk directly to R. This bizarre exchange leads R. to a special video featuring the guy instructing R. to sniff poppers and watch porn clips. The experience is an epiphany for R.: a feeling of connection, primarily to himself.
Some people’s first introduction to Mira Nair might be as New York mayor Zohran Mamdani’s mom. But with her insightful direction of 1991’s Mississippi Masala, Nair shows how much she deserves to be known as an artist. Delivering a nuanced portrait of a romance between a Black man and an Indian woman living in the South, Nair explores the complications each character faces, giving both equal weight.
When it comes the horror genre, I am VERY hard to please or impress, much less scare. Coming from a current mindset of appreciation for chilling, unsettling, tension-inducing efforts such as "Hereditary", "The Conjuring" (ONLY the first one to date, mind you), "Lights Out", "The Babadook", "Midsommar", "Talk To Me", "Oddity", "Bring Her Back", and the like
This story solidified my choices to consume a more plant-based diet and nearly made me cancel my subscriptions to big corporations like Amazon. The narrative was perfectly crafted and on par with Bong Joon-Ho’s other major works; Parasite and Snowpiercer.
One of the reasons I love watching movies is that, much like books, they serve as windows into other times and different places. Productions from around the world offer valuable insights into the history and culture of their respective countries. And just like literature, cinema can help us understand the present by showing us the past.
This side-splitting workplace comedy features a diverse cast and tackles challenging social issues. Other sitcoms should take note.
With such a raw look at the 15th century, it seems that Disney was really trying to step outside of its element with this motion picture.
