'Moonlight': A Retrospective on Barry Jenkins' Masterpiece
Barry Jenkins' masterpiece holds up as the story of a lifetime centered on the intersection of Blackness and gay identity.

Ariana (Wanna Ali) hopes that the love she has shared for 8 years will lead to marriage. However, Ariana's dream of marrying Azman is halted when Azman is pressured by both his parents to marry their choice. Azman and Ariana's love does not materialize when Azman is forced to comply with his parents' wishes. Ikmal (Adam Lee), who has tired of traveling and now has his own business here, refuses to follow his girlfriend Sofia to Australia. Despite being persuaded several times, Ikmal stands firm in his decision because he has been away from his mother for years and cannot bear to leave them alone when they are old and in need of attention. Ariana is saddened by Azman's unwillingness to fight for their love. Ariana goes to a restaurant to calm herself but there is no empty table for her. Ariana and Ikmal quarrel over a table and are eventually forced to share it because all other tables are full. Ariana looks at Ikmal who is just bowing his head reading a message on his mobile phone.
