The film takes place in a small town in Bihar (now Jharkhand). All the main characters belong to a Bengali Christian community established there. Bhramar is a teenager who lives with her father and stepmother. She is quiet and lonely, and remains sad because her relationship with her stepmother is not good. She has a good singing voice but cannot tell anyone about her desire to become a singer.
