Thomas Clement Douglas PC CC SOM was a Scottish-born Canadian politician who served as the seventh premier of Saskatchewan from 1944 to 1961 and leader of the New Democratic Party from 1961 to 1971. He is perhaps best remembered as the "father of Medicare," and in 2004 was chosen as "The Greatest Canadian", based on a Canada-wide, CBC viewer-supported survey. He is the father of Shirley Douglas, father-in-law of Donald Sutherland, and grandfather of Kiefer Sutherland, all famous actors.
